Description:

There is little study of personal characteristics in the field of information systems. Some research suggests that differing ethics and values and the conflict associated with those are a natural outcome of an organization made up of diverse members. For instance, Kiranne (1990) defines organizational culture as the management of organizational values and the conflicts those values create. Schein (1992) considers organizational culture to be a system of shared values and beliefs that interact with organizational members to create norms of behavior. Interest in the distinctively human level-of-analysis of organizations is increasing. This interest suggests the need to understand how organizations can recognize and capitalize upon human characteristics such as feelings, ethics, values and other beliefs, knowledge and experience, and human abilities. Decision aids are a mode for this transformation. We propose that a new DSS research vector be the understanding and support of problem solving and the complexities introduced by human characteristics.

We invite work-in-progress or completed research that supports a better understanding of the relationship of human characteristics and the relationship of those characteristics to the solving of complex problems in the context of providing decision support.

The mini-track will focus on:

  • The relationships among ethics, decision-making and support, and/or problem solving
  • The relationships among values, decision-making and support, and/or problem solving
  • The relationships among emotion and affect, decision-making and support, and/or problem solving
  • The relationships among personality, decision-making and support, and/or problem solving
  • The relationships among various human characteristics (e.g. ethics, values, emotion, affect, and personality) in the decision-making and problem solving environment
