Over the past 15
years attitudes toward business
processes have changed significantly
within organizations. What started
with Total Quality Management
initiatives and continued through
Business Process Reengineering (BPR)
projects of the early1990s has
evolved into a comprehensive
management practice that permeates
both the business and the technology
side of organizations. Business
Process Management (BPM) can be
defined as methods and tools
surrounding the definition,
implementation, and improvement of
lateral processes in organizations.
The use of Business Process
Automation technology in this
context promises significant
efficiency gains for the enterprise
through the automated coordination
of activities, process participants
and the integration of applications.
It plays a significant role in both
intra-organizational and
inter-organizational process design.
On the business side, the
standardization of XML-based data
exchange protocols enables companies
to integrate their processes
independent of the underlying
technology. On the technical side,
the use of software architecture
frameworks such as the
Service-Oriented Architecture
enables designers of workflow
applications to integrate both
legacy systems and internet
technology with relative ease. This
minitrack will address issues
related to the management of
business processes as well as
technologies for process automation.
