Description:

This mini-track is designed to share the experiences of academicians with assessment of MIS courses and curriculum.  Assessment is a continuous improvement process that all institutions must now implement in order to be accredited or keep accreditation by both AACSB and ABET.

Moving from an autonomous environment to one where programs, and courses are assessed in light of how well they currently meet stated student learning objectives and how learning objective could be better accomplished is no easy task.  No one approach to assessment implementation or assessment technique is best for all situations.  As we know all colleges and universities differ greatly in culture, curriculum and the way they operate.  Thus, many assessment approaches and techniques are in the works.

This mini-track is a forum to share assessment experiences.  The papers submitted to this mini-track are expected to share experiences as well as any evidence, empirical or anecdotal, that a particular approach or technique does or does not work well.  The goal is to share this knowledge and experience so we can learn together from each other as we move down the path to assessment.

The mini-track will focus on:

  • Creating a culture for assessment
  • Developing learning objectives
  • Assessment techniques
  • Assessing courses, programs, or majors
  • Implementation Techniques
  • Continuous improvement of curriculum
  • Assessment of the core class
  • Assessment versus evaluation
  • Using feedback from students to improve learning
  • Promoting learning through the use of assessment
  • Assessment of critical thinking
  • Interpreting the results of assessment data
  • Course/teaching enhancements made based on assessment results
  • Direct and indirect assessment measures
  • Experiences with accreditation bodies
  • Managing faculty resistance to assessment
  • Conceptual frameworks of assessment (e.g., relationships among assessment, curricula, teaching and learning)
  • Empirical tests of conceptual frameworks
  • Alignment of learning outcomes among courses, academic programs, the institution and accreditation agencies
  • Assessment of technical versus other key skills and abilities for MIS graduates
