Career Services - Life's Best Destinations
Internships
The Career Management Center's goal is to help discover a successful pathway, not only focusing on the journey but also the destination. The journey begins with student skill building, self-development, and self-discovery. The destination begins when the student realizes his or her ability to make a difference.

  • Customize an internship program to meet employer needs.
  • Hire skilled labor in a cost-effective way and gain fresh ideas and perspectives.
  • Increase visibility and gain a positive reputation on campus, garnering a competitive advantage in hiring highly qualified CSU talent.
  • Assess the fit between the organization and intern before considering an offer for full-time employment.
Creating an Internship
The Career Management Center's staff is available to customize your internship and help your organization brand its opportunities through the use of listservs, faculty communications, video and media alternatives, and interactions with business student organizations.
Internship Position Description
Successful descriptions highlight the value of the internship to the student. Please include:
  • Brief description of your organization
  • Position title with skills and qualifications desired
  • Duties, responsibilities, and expectations
  • Wage, hours per week, and start and end dates
Compensation
Hiring a CSU College of Business student as an intern is a cost-effective way for an organization to supplement its staff. Compensation is optional; however, in consideration of wage and hour laws, consider paid vs. unpaid status and stipends. Interns who are compensated should be paid through W-2, not 1099, due to student tax and liability issues.
The Department of Labor allows interns to be unpaid only if ALL the following criteria are met:
  • The training would be comparable to that given at a vocational school.
  • The training would benefit the student.
  • The student would not replace regular employees but would work under close supervision of existing staff.
  • The employer would not immediately benefit from the student’s activities.
  • The employer would be required to cover workers’ compensation if the intern is a volunteer (not receiving credit).
Steps After an Intern Is Hired
  • Assign a mentor. This person will be a good resource for questions, evaluations, feedback, and guidance.
  • Provide an orientation of the organization.
  • Offer valuable opportunities for the intern to participate in meetings, networking, and volunteering.
  • Clearly communicate company opportunities for employment. Interns fall into an "at-will" employment status.
