Running in the background at almost every successful enterprise is a seamless computer information system that, if it’s doing its job right, everyone forgets it’s there. Professionals in computer information systems (CIS) are the ones who not only keep that information technology systems running, but design, implement, and improve system quality.
The Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS) in the College of Business at Colorado State University specializes in providing state-of-the-art systems education. With a strong emphasis on business applications, we offer a balance between the technical and managerial skills you’ll need to be successful in the IT workplace. Our CIS program, and our students, benefit from close industry relationships, excellent facilities, and a strong tradition of being one of the oldest CIS/MIS programs in the country.
We offer an undergraduate concentration in Computer Information Systems as part of the College of Business Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. We offer a Master of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Computer Information Systems designed to meet the needs of both the non-IT and IT professional. Our Department also has an Information Technology Certificate available to undergraduate students in the College of Business as a means of supplementing their area of concentration and helping to meet their career goals.
Undergraduate Concentration
As a CIS professional, you need to understand both technical and organizational factors, and be able to help an organization determine how information and technology-enabled business processes can provide a foundation for superior organizational performance. You’ll serve as a bridge between the technical and management communities within an organization.
Most courses in the CIS concentration fit a logical progression that will help you be successful in higher level courses. The CIS course curriculum can be complemented with electives from production, quantitative analysis, computer science and other business courses. Our curriculum provides you with a broad understanding of business, a basic competence in business computer programming, knowledge of information technology infrastructure and a sound foundation in systems analysis and design. The coursework requires extensive use of state-of-the-art computer hardware and software tools.
Information Technology Certificate
Information technology (IT) pervades every aspect of business, and employers often seek out graduates who can effectively use IT in their area of concentration. The IT for Business Professionals Certificate is designed to give you an edge in the job market by complementing your concentration with knowledge and skills for evaluating, designing and using software systems to solve business problems and improve decision making.
Master of Science in Business Administration with a Concentration in Computer Information Systems
A Master of Science degree for a more specialized focus is available at the graduate level. A degree in computer information systems provides a strong set of technical skills placed on a foundation of broad business knowledge. Our master’s program is designed for students with or without experience in CIS. We have students who are coming back to school to re-tool for a new career, a large number of international students, as well as CIS professionals looking to take their careers up a notch. The program can be completed in one year, but also can be designed for students who are continuing to work and wish to go to school part time.
