Accenture Provides Scholarships in the Name of Five Faculty Members

10/15/2008

Accenture provides $500 in scholarships each year in the name of five faculty members ($100 per faculty member).  One of those is selected as the overall “winner” and that person’s name goes on a plaque in the trophy case.  This year, the overall “winner” was Ken Manning, Professor of Marketing and FirstBank Research Fellow. Below  is complete the list of this year’s winners.  The awards are on the basis of commitment to students -- their education and their careers.  So these are people who work with students outside the classroom as well as doing a good job teaching.

Finance – Sue Hine, Instructor
In her nearly two decades of teaching in the Department of Finance and Real Estate, Sue Hine has always been dedicated to student learning. She spends many hours in course preparation, grading, and helping students outside of class. She participates in student events and provides career counseling. Finance students consistently rank her as one of the best teachers they have ever had and her average student evaluation scores consistently exceed 4.5 on a 5 point scale. Many finance majors have named her as their most influential faculty member on the Senior Exit Survey.

CIS – Dan Turk, Associate Professor
Dan Turk has the ability to make a very technical subject fun and memorable.  This ability has served us well with his contact with high school students and our undergraduate CIS majors. In addition, he has demonstrated a passion for the international dimension and has been instrumental in setting up research and teaching relationships in India, and is serving on the committee that is considering the expansion of GSSE activities.  Overall, he adds a great deal to the programs and atmosphere in the Department and the College.

Accounting - Don Samelson, Associate Professor
Don Samelson  excels in tax education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, both on campus and via distance delivery. His teaching ratings are consistently high and feedback from both former students and current employers attest to the relevance and quality of his courses. Don also serves as the director and primary advisor to our Masters of Accountancy program.

Marketing - Ken Manning, Professor and FirstBank Research Fellow
Ken Manning motivates his students to reach their maximum potential by setting high standards and showing them how much he cares about their learning experiences.  He sets them on the learning path with clear directions, but expects them to show creativity and resourcefulness as they find their way.  Ken’s students praise his high level of knowledge, enthusiasm, and 24/7 dedication to their learning experiences.

Management – Dawn DeTienne, Assistant Professor
Dawn DeTienne is a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who generates a lot of passion in her students.  She has devoted a substantial amount of time and energy to supporting the activities of the Entrepreneurship Center, the mission of which is, in part, to connect students with entrepreneurs and expose students to various aspects of entrepreneurship.  She has helped to line up speakers for the Great Entrepreneurship Speaker Series, participants in the entrepreneurship rotating dinner, and judges for Venture Adventure, all of which provide excellent opportunities for students to interact with entrepreneurs.  She has also helped students create and grow the CEO Club.
