JAMES R. SMITH

Smith Investments

James “Jim” Smith has worked 35 years in the investment business, of which the past 25 years have been focused on real estate investments, primarily income properties. In 1980 he joined five other local businessmen and chartered a national bank, now the Wells Fargo Bank of South Fort Collins.

Mr. Smith’s career began as a securities broker with Boettcher and Company from 1972-1978. In 1979 he was a commodity research analyst for C.P.M., and since 1980, he has served as Chief Executive Officer of Smith Investments, Inc., of Fort Collins.

Mr. Smith graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1967, earned a master’s degree in Economics in 1969 and an MBA in 1971 from Colorado State University.
Mr. Smith’s affiliations with the University and College extend to leadership levels, he has served as a board member and former chairman of the CSU Development Council. He has also served as a board member for the College of Business Center of Entrepreneurial and Family Enterprises, and was co-chair of the Proud Future Campaign.

He has also been instrumental in starting the Colorado State University Sports Hall of Fame and chaired the Hall of Fame Banquet its first three years. He was a board member and past president of the Ram Masters (organized to provide financial support and direction for the CSU Golf Program) and served as president for the first three years. His efforts also connected him with students through the Investments class he taught for the College of Business in 1981. Currently he is a member of the College of Business GLC and a member of the CSU President’s advisory council. He has also provided summer jobs for student athletes for over 10 years.
