The Computer Information Systems (CIS) department is a leader in the
education of future information technology (IT) professionals.
IT professionals are responsible for helping information flow through
organizations enabling business functions to be efficient, effective and
profitable. They analyze and evaluate business processes; propose, develop,
test, and implement technology-based solutions; design, build, and manage
databases and networks; create and maintain websites; train and assist users
of technology; and offer consulting services.
Careers in CIS are exciting, fast-paced, challenging, always-changing,
sometimes unpredictable, and contrary to some claims, involve excellent
interpersonal skills. New tools and methods are often available and new
skills must be continuously developed in order to stay competitive and
marketable.
We offer both an
Undergraduate Concentration in Computer Information Systems and a
Master of Science
in Computer Information Systems. These programs offer a unique blend of
technology and business education with a strong emphasis on practical
knowledge and skills that our students acquire through hands-on learning.
Here are some highlights:
-
Our undergraduate program began in the 1960’s as one of
the first sanctioned by the
Association of Information
Technology Professionals (formerly the Data
Processing Management Association). We have continued
to maintain a cutting-edge curriculum by acting on the
recommendations of leading industry and academic groups
such as the Association of Information Technology
Professionals, the
Association for
Information Systems and the
Association for Computing
Machinery.
-
Our Master of Science in Computer Information Systems
program is designed to accommodate both non-IT
professionals who are seeking to retool for an IT career
as well as IT professionals who wish to extend their
technical and managerial skills for assuming leadership
positions.
-
Our programs are responsive to the market thanks to
valuable input from a departmental Advisory Council that
includes company representatives from Accenture, Ernst &
Young, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, QWEST and Shell
Oil.

-
Our students are engaged and active learners who
participate in community projects and acquire critical
leadership skills through student-run organizations such
as the
CIS
Club.
-
Our graduates enjoy some of the highest starting
salaries among all majors at the University. They are
also assured of quick job placements with most graduates
starting their careers within 30 days of graduation.
-
Our faculty members are knowledgeable and dedicated and
recognized for their excellence in teaching and
research.
