Finance and Real Estate Department > Message from the Department Chair

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Finance and Real Estate Department, I would like to welcome you. The department offers the Bachelors of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance-Real Estate. Within this, the student has two options, the Finance Option and the Real Estate Option. Students interested in the MBA program will want to go to the MBA section.

Finance Option. The finance function encompasses the financial management of firms and the management of investments. Real Estate embraces the development, financing, management, and marketing of land resources.

In financial management, an analysis is made of such key issues as capital budgeting and the financing issues of the firm. The program prepares students to identify relevant problems and to make and defend reasoned decisions in financial planning, financial control, and financial policy.

The study of financial institutions and markets develops an understanding of the strategy and policy of financial institutions. The key internal aspects of firms are examined as well as their responses to changing conditions in the money and capital markets.

Investment management focuses on the theoretical and practical assets of investment in corporate securities, mutual funds, and other investment media that are relevant for individual investors and their institutional counterparts. Emphasis is placed on the role of the computer in the decision-making process. Analytical tools are developed to evaluate investment alternatives and to construct a portfolio of assets to meet investment objectives.

Finance students find initial employment opportunities as financial analysts, financial planning trainees, credit analysts, security analysts, loan analysts, and as assistants to senior finance officers. Positions may be found in the finance departments of business firms, governmental agencies, and in financial institutions such as savings institutions, finance companies, commercial banks, investment banks, stock brokerages, and investment departments of insurance and real estate companies.

Real Estate Option. Real estate embraces the development, financing, management and marketing of land resources. The utilization and disposition of these resources by developers, and real estate financiers is analyzed.

College graduates are in great demand for professional services in property development, brokerage, appraising, property management, mortgage lending, and teaching and research in real estate related areas. Governmental activities in housing, planning, and home financing present other career opportunities.

The department's faculty is proud of its diversity in these areas of Finance and Real Estate. This enables a student to concentrate on any aspect of these fields that he/she is interested in. This site will provide information on the program, the faculty, the department, and research links that are helpful to all students of Finance and Real Estate. For further information, please contact the department.
