Finance & Real Estate Interns . . . Making a Difference

Outstanding teachers that are also experts in their fields motivate challenge, and guide students. The department is proud to have:
- Two of the last three recipients of the annual Outstanding Teacher Award in the College of Business
- Excellent course evaluations, student job placement
- Textbook authors
- Top journal articles that together span the breadth of finance scholarship, including contributions in international finance, corporate finance, financial planning, insurance, investments, and real estate
- Specialized options for students: Corporate Finance, Investment Management, and Professional Financial Planning
Candidates and Qualifications
The Department has been proactive in ensuring that our graduates obtain the skills necessary to excel in the workplace. This is evident from student choice of the preparation we offer in the concentration:
- Finance & real estate represents the concentration chosen by the largest number of undergraduates in the College of Business, with more than one-third of all declared majors.
- Of the 1890 undergraduates in the College of Business 674 choose us as their concentration and another 65 choose us as their second concentration (as of 12/06).
- Hands-on experience with available productivity software, Internet, and database resources is a regular component of our curriculum.
- We offer the Summit Fund-- an investment portfolio managed by a team of students each semester.
- We offer the Bloomberg Financial Data System-- an important advanced and sophisticated analytic tool used by investment professionals (an opportunity offered by only a very small number of universities).
- Internship credit for declared finance concentration students requires successful course completion and junior or senior status.
Building Character & Careers
The Finance Internship Program is designed to meet the demands of a competitive marketplace for finance students and majors by providing a method for obtaining valuable work experience that integrates with classroom learning. It requires that interns do the following.
- Undertake professional level challenges along with encountering an organization’s corporate culture
- Gather information to help guide their career decisions
- Negotiate appropriate work expectations and salary with the employer, complete an internship contract, and submit a formal report to the internship coordinator
