Comments from the 2009-2010 Mentors
- He needed help with registration and what classes to take. We had many conversations about what classes/teachers are good and how to go through the registration process.
- I feel as though I've been a good resource for helping my mentee understand the logistics of college life; for example, helping with spring semester registration, suggested groups/classes to join, as well as get a broader knowledge of what's available within the community and not just on campus.
- I feel that I have shown her that it’s okay to be herself. College is a place where she can grow and gain the tools to become the best she can be. My mentee seems to be adjusting well to college, and I have hopefully helped her realize (or have emphasized to her) that her positive attitude will help her make the most of this experience and help her transition well.
- I have helped my mentee realize that just because you join something does not mean you are involved, but actively participating will help you to reap the benefits you are looking for. Also, that studying and going to class in important to succeed.
- I have helped them know how to stay organized and to try to take things one at a time and not get overwhelmed with a busy schedule. I also got her interested in Delta Sigma Pi, the co-ed business fraternity I am in, and now she is in it as member.
- To keep up on school work. But she is a very independent individual which has been wonderful to see. Also, over break she contacted me saying that it was a culture shock back at home and so I tried to help her through that a little.
- When we met we spent most of our time talking about how to handle classes, allocating study time, and overall time management skills.
- Keeping that mentor/mentee relationship. Come to find out we have many of the same friends, and participate in some of the same programs on campus, so we've spent a lot of time around one another.
- I am good friends with my mentee and have enjoyed getting to know him. I also am glad that I have been able to spend time with some of his good friends! I really enjoy the relationships that have been built.
- I do feel that my mentee looks forward to meeting with me and that they value my opinion and know that I am trying to help them through this transition.
- I love the relationship that my mentee and I have built. I feel that we have become friends to each other, and that trust is incredible.
- The feeling of accomplishment when they call you to tell you how well they did on a midterm, when they let you know about a conflict that was resolved between them and a roommate. Just hearing about their small successes and feeling that you may have had a part in it.
- The greatest benefit of being a mentor is being able to talk to and have a friendship with this amazing wonderful person. I truly appreciate my mentee and she has taught me so much about college life and she has been so positive. I appreciate this opportunity to positively impact her life and serve as a contact by which she can gain any information, insight, and guidance she may need. I always wanted someone approachable during my freshmen year in which I could ask any question I wanted and I am glad that I can serve that role for my mentee.
- Going into this program I felt like I had strong leadership skills, but they grew tremendously after just one semester. It enabled me to make better decisions for myself so I can be a positive role model for my mentee.
- I have had the great opportunity to experience multiple leadership opportunities at CSU. Each and every one of those experiences contributed to my leadership and personal development and I am so grateful. The mentoring experience has also given me this opportunity - I have certainly learned a lot from it. However, I have also learned and used some of the material that is discussed/ used in the mentoring from previous experiences. It has reinforced a plethora of leadership skills and ideas that I already have learned and am trying to refine.
- Felicia Zamora as the program coordinator - so friendly, helpful, and thoughtful! I also like all of the mentoring events and how they're all beneficial & fun - either workshops or fun game breaks (scavenger hunt, game day). The workshops are all extremely helpful such as resume, cover letter, etc. but also good for networking. I also love how there's prize give-aways every mentoring event - such incentive! and how you usually feed us poor students. :)
- I love the flexible nature of it- I appreciate the fact that mentors and mentees are given so much latitude to create a relationship on their own terms. It isn't forced. I also love my mentee (we were a great match), I love the advisors/coordinators, etc. I think this is a well planned/executed program.
- I'm so glad that I'm a part of the COB Mentoring Program! I've learned so much, gained a great new friend, and had a load of fun!! I would definitely do it all over again if I had the chance - and wouldn't ask for anything different. Thank you so much for giving me this extremely valuable opportunity!

(The greatest benefit of being a mentor has been) Watching my mentee grow as a young college adult! It is amazing to see them coming in as a freshmen and just jumping into somewhat of a new world. It is very encouraging to see this fresh mind take on such great trials and conquer them. Knowing that I contributed a little to his/her new life as a college student is a great feeling.

I think it (being a mentor) definitely helped my personal development skills. I had to remember to forget all the hectic stuff in my life and take some time to think about someone else and remember they are going through a ton as well.

Yes. It (being a mentor) has helped my personal development because it helps me act and present myself in a more professional way. It keeps me focused by helping me make sure I set a good example and have the right answers for my mentee.

I think it (the College of Business Mentoring Program) has helped my personal development. I feel more comfortable talking with people I have never met before and I now realize the importance of a mentor/mentee relationship. It is something that I would like to continue into the future.

I feel that the greatest benefit to being a mentor is that I get pleasure of seeing my mentee succeed. Furthermore, I benefit because I gain a better understanding of being a role model and a good leader.

I like knowing that I can be of help to people. When she and I first met it was really great to give my feed back to her and I was surprised how much I went gone through my first couple of years here at Colorado State.

I have helped her with adjusting to college and life in Colorado. She is from out-of-state so I have tried to make her stay here fill more like home. I have tried to give her the “inside know” of how things operate from my stand point. I feel that I have helped her find resources on campus and how to locate those. My mentee is fairly independent so I have not had to guide her too much.
