Mentoring Program Scholars
Congratulations, Gregory Shields!
Mentoring Scholarship Recipient 2011-2012

In Greg's words:
Gregory Shields Hi, I am Greg Shields. I was born in Missouri, lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and moved to Aurora, CO and have lived there ever since. I am definitely a family man; I’m real soft when it comes to my nieces and nephews. During my free time, I enjoy playing sports, hanging out with friends, and I love music. I graduated from Eaglecrest High School in Centennial, Colorado and after choosing Colorado State University, I chose to pursue a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing.

I joined the COB Mentoring Program with intentions of receiving extra help when I needed it, but got much more than I could have ever imagined from the program. The COB Mentoring Program is dear to me because of the personal connections I’ve made with people all over campus that also are a part of this illustrious program and have become close friends. The people I’ve met and the moments we’ve made in the Mentoring Program will always have an effect on me, dating all the way back to the Mentoring Program’s Orientation. My fondest memories of the Mentoring Program consists of all of the events that were held that helped me maintain focus and structure throughout my freshman year while providing a sense of support that I could never duplicate.

I was lucky enough to have the one and only, Jarrud Talley, as a mentor and wouldn’t choose anyone else to be my mentor. As a keepsake, Jarrud always emphasized to me that everyone, at some point in time, needs help and he urged me to help others when you have also received help, to return the favor. No one has made it to where they are without any help; and I can confirm that statement because without Jarrud Talley, I’m not sure I would have been a name on the Dean’s List or named the COB Mentoring Scholar.

This award will help me tremendously by primarily helping my family financially in such a troubled economy, but also strengthening my resume with such a prestigious award. As I enter my sophomore year, I anticipate meeting many more people whom I can consider a mentor and hopefully learn how to become a better student and mentor myself. With Jarrud always stressing to me the need to help others, I would be honored to return my junior year as a mentor in hope of making someone else’s freshman year as memorable as Jarrud made mine. I am thankful for the experience I had as a mentee in the COB Mentoring Program and am privileged to have had the opportunity be a part of one of the best programs Colorado State University has to offer.
