Two members of the College of Business were recognized
for excellence at the Celebrate Colorado State! Luncheon held on
April 26th. Doug Hoffman was named a University Distinguished Teaching
Scholar and Pam Johannsen received the State Classified Personnel
Outstanding Achievement Award.
The title of University Distinguished Teaching Scholar is conferred upon the
most outstanding teaching faculty members of Colorado State University. The
appointment is for the duration of the faculty member’s association with the
university and only 12 persons may hold the title at any one time. A very
high honor indeed!! The press release regarding Doug’s recognition is
presented below.
Pam has given seven years of dedicated and loyal service to the College
after previously holding a variety of positions across campus. She is a very
worthy recipient of the State Classified Personnel Outstanding Achievement
Award, which is the highest award given to state classified personnel. Pam’s
nomination was enthusiastically supported by the dean, associate deans and
department chairs. A profile of Pam, including some quotes from her and
excerpts from her nomination for the award, is also presented below.
Hearty congratulations and sincere thanks to Doug and Pam for setting and
meeting such high standards!!
Doug Hoffman
K. Douglas Hoffman, marketing professor in the College of Business, is known
as a leader in advancing teaching practices at Colorado State. He is an
innovative teacher, course developer and significant contributor to the
scholarship of teaching in the marketing discipline.
Hoffman, who specializes in the study of services marketing, contributed to
the development of teaching at CSU through the College of Business Master
Teaching Initiative, or MTI; curricular development activities; and various
service functions. Mike Palmquist, director of the Institute for Teaching
and Learning and also a University Distinguished Teaching Scholar, said: “My
work with Dr. Hoffman has left me even more impressed that I had been when I
first approached him. It has been a genuine pleasure to share ideas with him
and to support him in his efforts to further the work he’s already done with
the MTI in the College of Business.”
A 2003 alumna and former student of Hoffman noted: “Dr. Hoffman is a very
influential professor. My experiences and knowledge gained during
undergraduate marketing classes with him has equipped me to take on my
career with a realistic approach…he does an exceptional job in bringing
real-life examples into his classroom, and he provides a teaching atmosphere
full of flexibility to challenge the student’s potential.”
Hoffman’s innovative textbook contributions include his services marketing
text, now in its third edition, which was the first textbook targeted
exclusively to undergraduates. Raymond W. LaForge, Brown-Forman Professor of
Marketing at the University of Louisville and founding editor of “Marketing
Education Review,” said, “(Hoffman’s) textbook, ‘Marketing: Best Practices,’
has been acknowledged as an innovative product for the principles of
marketing course. Professor Hoffman has had a distinguished career, and all
indications are that he will make significant contributions to teaching and
scholarship in the future.”
Since joining the University in 1997, Hoffman has won at least one major
teaching or advising award per year, including the Board of Governors
Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2006. He also has been honored
by major marketing academic professional organizations.
Pam Johannsen
The opportunity to work with bright, energetic students, dedicated staff and
talented faculty has provided an environment in which Pam Johannsen, Program
Assistant II in the College of Business, has thrived for the past seven
years. “I was fortunate to bring an array of administrative and academic
department experience to the College that enabled me to be a jack of all
trades in the lean administrative structure of the College. When I joined
the College we were in the process of establishing a new vision and we have
since been striving to meet ambitious goals. We are now reaping the rewards
of our combined efforts.”
One department chair stated that “Pam’s contributions are extraordinary and
have a significant impact on the efficiency of our operation and the morale
of her co-workers. She is an incredible multi-tasker. She has the unique
ability to prioritize and focus on key projects while simultaneously
handling conflicting demands on her time.” Another chair noted that “Pam
takes the initiative and eagerly takes on additional duties beyond her job
description. She is a professional and leads by example. I rely heavily upon
her for critical support in everything from class scheduling to personnel
issues to public relations. She is my one constant, reliable source of
information.”
Pam is committed to the community through her longstanding, dedicated
volunteer efforts with Meals on Wheels, the Food Bank for Larimer County,
National Charity League, Poudre Schools, and the CSU Activities Board. “The
Colorado State and the Fort Collins communities have afforded me wonderful
opportunities and giving back to both is very important to me.”
