WHAT:
Connie Pechmann, Professor of Marketing in the Graduate School of
Management at the University of California, Irvine will discuss "TV
Shows that Model Adolescent Drug Use or Abuse: Effects on Normative
Beliefs and Drug Use Intentions," for the Colorado State University
Marketing Department's Partners in Excellence Program.
Pechmann conducts controlled experiments to study the effects of
advertising on vulnerable consumer groups such as adolescents. Since
1991, Pechmann has received four grants amounting to more than $1
million from the California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program
to study the influence of pro- and anti-smoking media messages on
adolescents, including smoking scenes in movies and the showing of
antismoking advertisements before movies. Pechmann is currently
studying the effectiveness of antidrug messages in television shows
targeted at adolescents.

Pechmann has been a consultant to the U.S. Office of National Drug
Control Policy's youth antidrug media campaign called "My
Anti-Drug." She also has assisted with the Massachusetts, Canada and
California antismoking advertising campaigns, and has testified at
California State Senate hearings on tobacco control issues.
