Laptop Program Proposal for Fall '03 Freshmen

The College of Business is currently pursuing a required laptop program, and if approved will begin in Fall 2003. The proposal would require all incoming business freshmen to purchase a laptop from the College. The College believes that in order to deliver the highest quality education possible in the extremely technical area of business, it is essential that students have equal access to the same technology used by faculty members. Our curriculum reflects an expectation that our students have the necessary tools to be highly proficient in the use of technology. Once implemented, the laptop program will aid students in preparing for the fast-paced technical world of their future workplaces.

Program Benefits for students and parents

  • Uniformity - Students will have the same software as all other freshmen Business students and the software needed to complete business course assignments.

  • Flexibility - Students can more effectively use computers from other locations on campus. Since the computers offer wireless usage, they will provide “anytime, anywhere” convenience. Students will be able to connect to all network services and functions between the College of Business, Morgan Library and the Lory Student Center.

  • Support - The computers will be under warranty and IT lab staff will be available to troubleshoot and make repairs if needed.

  • Value and Convenience - Students and parents will not have the difficulty of deciding which computer and what software to buy. Also, the cost of hardware and software will be spread out over eight semesters. Due to buying power and academic incentives, the cost of hardware and software will be substantially lower than individual purchases.

  • Integration - The laptop will be compatible with current applications used in corporate America and by business faculty.

Common Questions answered

Q: How much would the laptop cost?
A: Laptops would be offered to new freshmen for about $200/semester. At the end of the contract (4 years), students would be able to purchase their laptop.

Q: Is this more expensive than buying my own computer?
A: No! The College of Business conducted a study that compared the cost of an individual purchasing hardware and software for a laptop to the cost of our laptop plan. Cost comparison table

Q: What kind of laptop would I get and what would be included?
A: Students will be issued an IBM Thinkpad. Features include: 900 MHz, 128 RAM, 10 Gig hard drive, 13.3” monitor and wireless connectivity (802.11b). The plan comes with IBM’s extended service and support. Students will receive the majority of software applications needed for classes, including applications that may be otherwise cost prohibitive or not available for individual purchase due to license restrictions. On-campus support will be provided by the Software Cellar and Rockwell Hall's Computer Helpdesk.

Q: Will I also pay the College of Business standard technology fee?
A: Yes. The cost of the laptop plan is separate from the existing technology fee of $80 per semester.

Q: What would happen to my laptop if I left the College of Business before the contract is up?
A: You could turn it in for a pro-rated refund or purchase the remainder of the contract.
