Workshop
Entity Data Platform
Presenter: Jose Blakely, Microsoft
This workshop describes the ADO.NET Entity Framework, a platform for programming against data that raises the level of abstraction from the logical (relational) level to the conceptual (entity) level, and thereby significantly reduces the impedance mismatch for applications and data services such as reporting, analysis, and replication. The conceptual data model is made real by a runtime that implements an extended relational model (the Entity Data Model aka the EDM), that embraces entities and relationships as first class concepts; a query language for the EDM; a comprehensive mapping engine that translates from the conceptual to the logical (relational) level, and a set of model-driven tools that help create entity-object, object-xml, and entity-xml transformers.

MISQE Sponsored Workshop on Developing Papers for Practitioner Audiences
Chairs: Cynthia Beath, University of Texas at Austin
The editors of MISQ Executive will facilitate a workshop on writing for practitioner-oriented journals such as MISQE, SMR, HBR or CMR. We invite authors to submit papers or short abstracts for discussion at the workshop. Details about these submissions can be found at the MISQE website, at www.misqe.org. During the workshop, authors of three of these submissions will work in small groups along with two or three editors to learn how to present their research findings in articles targeted at the reflective practitioner. The workshop should help participants be better producers and consumers of articles in journals that are mainly read by practitioners.

Web 2.0 - Overview, Principals, Constituents and Business Models
Chairs: Srinivas Padmanabhuni, Infosys Technologies Ltd, Jai Ganesh, Infosys Technologies
Web 2.0 refers to the adoption of open technologies and architectural frameworks to facilitate participative computing thereby creating enhanced customer experience, collaboration and co-creation of value. Web 2.0 relies heavily on creating and leveraging network effects by attracting a large number of participants and enabling interactions between them. Customer and partner facing processes using Web 2.0 has the potential to not only transform peer-to-peer collaboration, but also inter-entity collaborations and commerce by enabling various types and combinations of collaboration and commerce such as business-to-consumer (B2B), business-to-business (B2B), consumer-to-consumer (C2C), business-to-enterprise (B2E) business-to-government (B2G) etc. collaboration and commerce. Web 2.0 has the potential to not only enable rich peer-to-peer interactions but also enable collaborative value creation across business partners.

Business Process Management - More than Business Modeling and Management
Leader: David Graves, IBM
The Business Process Management (BPM) workshop begins with a discussion of audience perceptions of business process management gained from the available literature. The workshop will continue by positing a broad definition of business process management that will lead to discovery of the information technology aspects of business process management. Information technology architecture artifacts from completed implementations will be introduced as examples of the information technology aspects of business process management and the session will round out with a depiction of the scope of business process management as a platform of viewpoints for future research and publication of BPM.

Helping IS Research Reach New Heights through Text Mining Methods
Chair: Dirk Hovorka, University of Colorado
Text mining and analysis approaches from information science and cognitive science have gained prominence as valid methods for examining both small and large text datasets. These approaches have lately been applied in Management, Sociology, and, to a lesser extent, in IS. One such approach, Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) has been hailed as both a theory of language use and a text analysis technique. This workshop will provide a review of how LSA has been used as a research method in the business fields. It will develop a conceptual framework to help the participants understand the contexts in which such approaches may be useful. It will cover approaches available for exploratory and predictive analysis. The workshop will also examine some text analysis methods which currently use hand-coding, and suggest ways in which these might be done using LSA. The workshop will then provide a hands-on example of how to use LSA to develop a research design appropriate for behavioral information systems research.

Analysis and Design in the IS Curriculum: Taking it to the Next Level
Panelists: Dinesh Batra, Florida International University, John Satzinger, Missouri State University, Heikki Topi
Several course-related and environment governed trends seem to impact the coverage in the Systems Analysis and Design (SA&D) course - the growing popularity of object-oriented techniques, the emergence of the iterative approach, the increasing adoption of the agile approach, the rising importance of UML, the outsourcing trend leading to global distribution of SA&D work, the shortening of the life cycle, and the rate of change in the environment. The scope of the course has increased. Yet, most MIS degree programs have just one SA&D course. The typical SA&D instructor faces a number of difficult questions when trying to fit the much larger range of topics into a single course. The panel will evaluate how the trends impact the coverage of the course.

IT Workforce Trends: Implications for Curriculum and Hiring
Panelists: Christine Bullen, Stevens Institute of Technology, Thomas Abraham, Kean University, Stuart Galup, Florida Atlantic University
Panelists will discuss a continuing research project into the IT Workforce and future trends, presenting the latest results of an international web-based survey. The project is sponsored by the SIM International Advocacy Program and consists of two phases. The initial phase was a study of workforce trends in IT client companies and was completed in 2006. IT executives from client firms say it is critical to own business and project management skills, especially in their mid-level hires. Technical skills are more likely to be externally sourced, but they are also sought in entry-level hires. The second phase is a study of trends in IT provider companies and is ongoing. Our preliminary results indicate that provider firms are also seeking project management and business domain capabilities over technical capabilities. We will compare the current results to the Phase one results from client organizations and discuss the implications of the data for curriculum design, hiring and training practices.

Testing, Testing, One, Two, Three: How to Compare Statistical Techniques Such as PLS, Regression, and LISREL
Chairs: William Lewis, Louisiana Tech University, Ron Thompson, Wake Forest University, Dale Goodhue, Terry College of Bus., University of Georgia
This tutorial presents a "how to" approach to using Monte Carlo simulation that can be used to test the efficacy of PLS, regression, LISREL and others statistical estimation techniques under various special conditions such as small sample size, missing data, non-normal distributions, etc. Our approach formed the basis for a forthcoming article in ISR, and another that is currently under review at MISQ. The tutorial will explain, step-by-step, how researchers can design and conduct a study using the Monte Carlo approach to help expand their understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of any statistical technique. We will also provide participants with the programs and software aids to be able to more easily use the technique themselves.

Technology-enhanced learning in blended learning environments: Practical considerations and lessons learned
Panelists: Chelley Vician, Michigan Technological University, Andrew Urbaczewski , Salisbury University, Michele Gribbins, University of Illinois at Springfield

There is little doubt that computer and communication technologies can enhance learning, if implemented in a well-structured pedagogical context. Previous research however tends to focus on comparing learning that takes place either in a traditional face-to-face environment, or exclusively on-line. What we term “blended learning environments” are probably much more common on university campuses than either of these extremes. A blended learning environment combines instructional delivery in a traditional face-to-face co-located context with on-line learning, either synchronously or asynchronously. This panel will provide practical lessons learned from deploying several commercially available audio- and video-based Web-enabled computer and communication tools for instructional delivery in a blended environment.

Service-Centric Computing and Its Impact on Business and Education
Panelists: J. Leon Zhao, University of Arizona, Michael Goul, Arizona State University, Sandeep Purao, Penn State University, Tony Shan, Mohan Tanniru, University of Arizona
The past few years have seen a dramatic development in service-centric computing and related technologies. According to Gartner, by 2008, 80 percent of software development projects will be based on service-oriented architectures. The distinction between software integrators and vendors will blur as packaged applications are broken apart and delivered as service-oriented business applications. This panel will gather a number of leading scholars from academia and industry who are interested in exploring the various research and development issues in service-centric computing. In particular, the panel will present their positions and insights and discuss with the audience on how business and education should take advantage of the upcoming paradigm shift in enterprise infrastructure as the corporate world moves deeper into service-centric computing.

Planners Lab
Chair: James Courtney, University of Central Florida
The Planners Lab (PL) ™ is a new software package with excellent tools for visualizing the output of spreadsheet models. It is free to faculty and students for academic, administrative or research use. The basic components of the PL are (1) an algebraic model-building language based on the Interactive Financial Planning Language once highly popular in schools of business and (2) excellent, easy-to-use features to visualize answers to what-if and goal-seek questions, that is to play with model assumptions and parameters and visually witness changes in results. The combination of these components allows business analysts to build, review and manipulate the assumptions that underlie a decision making scenario.

Future Directions in Methodologies and Tools for the Management of Security
Panelists: Joobin Choobineh, Texas A&M University, Gurpreet Dhillon, Virginia Commonwealth University, Michael Grimaila, Air Force Institute of Technology, Jackie Rees, Purdue University
Executive management is responsible for implementing enterprise-wide risk management programs as a means to insure cost efficient risk mitigation, compliance with laws and regulations, and communications with stakeholders. An important means of accurate measurement of the effectiveness of the management is establishment of a security metrics program. Security metrics can be used to evaluate complex information security programs, improve security processes, provide data used in the calculation of the return for security investment, determine compliance, and track progress toward desired security capabilities. There is a need for research to verify/confirm the management challenges, discover current management deficiencies, identify best practices, devise methodologies, and specify requirements for suitable metrics and tools for the management of security. The purpose of this panel is to draw upon the work and the experience of each panelist and the audience on this subject with particular emphasis on the management of information security.

Visualizing IS: A Introductory Tutorial on Geographic Information Systems
Chairs: Daniel Farkas, Pace University, Narayan Murthy, Pace University
Information Systems traditionally involve the application of computing to the problems of organizations. Geographic Information Systems are characterized by data, spatial objects, which have locations (e.g. addresses, landmarks, geopolitical boundaries, etc.) and data associated with them (e.g. demographic information, value, etc.). While many associate GIS systems with scientific data, emerging applications and research involves solving problems which asks business related questions about geospatial information and applied in many situations including Customer Analysis, Market Analysis, Site Selection, etc.

This tutorial will give a brief overview and demonstration of GIS concepts using the popular ESRI ARCView system. An exercise will include a brief GIS analysis to reinforce the introductory concepts.

The "Connecting the Americas" panelists will discuss what should become a very important future mini-track for IS/IT research. Connecting the Americas research involves the understanding, creation, and sharing of theoretical and practical IS/IT issues among researchers in the Americas (North, South, Central America and the Caribbean Region). As our global community continues to shrink, it is important to examine all aspects of research that can potentially connect our close neighbor countries and cultures. We believe that this panel discussion could lead to many valuable new streams of IS/IT research.

Positioning and Tracking Technologies in Healthcare: RFID and More
Chairs: Q.B. Chung, Villanova University, Nelson King, American University of Beirut
Widespread adoption of indoor positioning and tracking technologies in US healthcare is expected in 2007. The first implementation challenge is to compare the technological alternatives including various flavors of passive or active RFID, 802.11 fingerprinting, ultrasound, infrared, and even video. Each technology has its strengths and weaknesses so key tradeoffs are discussed. A taxonomy of positioning applications helps put into perspective the various triggers and contextual considerations that influence the choice of technology. Several case studies are used to illustrate the adoption challenges that will be encountered. These cases include a proof of concept implementation of a location tracking and verification system and several feasibility studies conducted for an emergency unit. One of these overlooked challenges is the need to integrate position information with clinical workflows which introduces social and organizational changes. Finally, areas of IS research related to position and tracking technologies are identified.

Undergraduate Information Systems Model Curriculum Revision: Rethinking the Approach and the Process
Panelists: Heikki Topi, n/a, Joe Valacich, Washington State University, Jay Nunamaker, University of Arizona, Janice Sipior, Villanova University
The panel will give the information systems community a status update of the recently launched joint ACM/AIS undergraduate IS curriculum revision effort and an opportunity to participate in the revision process. The panel will consist of the members of the ACM/AIS task force leading the project, and it will begin with a discussion on the factors that motivate this revision. We will continue with a description of three core themes that the task force believes are critically important for the revision process: expanding the scope of the model curriculum beyond schools of business/management, providing more flexibility to schools adopting the curriculum by separating the core of the curriculum from career track electives, and using Web 2.0 technologies to create a platform for ongoing curriculum maintenance.

The cost of traditional textbooks is a serious barrier to students wishing to obtain the education necessary to help lift themselves and their countries out of poverty. The project relies upon contributions from communities of academics, students and practitioners for textbook content. The proof of concept phase, consisting of texts on Information Systems and Business Fundamentals is well underway. Sufficient funding has been obtained from a Swiss Foundation to provide assurance of successful implementation of the initial two texts at universities in the developing world. Eight other texts have been proposed and are in various stages of development. The long-term goal of the project is to obtain corporate sponsors for 1000 books covering every major discipline in the first two years of a typical university curriculum. The panel members, all participants in the project, will discuss what has been learned in the past year, as well as plans to manage and scale the project. Issues covered will include community engagement, editorial oversight, and enlisting corporate support.

"Hands On" Enterprise Systems and Large Scale, Real Datasets Tutorial - Available Opportunities for Academic Use
Panelists: David Douglas, University of Arkansas, Phil Farley, IBM
Practical tutorial that includes a presentation and “hands on” use of examples and exercises related to University of Arkansas Sam M. Walton College of Business Enterprise Systems resources which include IBM mainframe, SAP, Teradata, and Microsoft systems. Industry partners of the Enterprise Systems program at the Walton College of Business have donated multiple, large-scale datasets for instructional use. For example, the Sam’s Club dataset is comprised of 6 tables and over 55 million rows of POS transactions for 18 stores; the Dillard’s Department Store has 5 tables with a transactions table of 120 million rows. Moreover, IBM, Microsoft, Teradata, and SAP have donated hardware and/or software to make these large datasets available to students. The presenters describe the datasets, business problems, and data warehouse infrastructures built using these datasets as well as their availability for use in a variety of courses. Also included are such topics as creating data warehouse cubes, data analysis, and data mining. Finally, access to these resources by faculty and students outside the University of Arkansas will be described.
